It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and the start of the new school year is upon us. We at NCI would like to wish all of our local member school districts and private schools a terrific 2014-15 school year!

To commemorate North County Incorporated’s (NCI) service to the community, NCI recently had a 37th Anniversary Dinner & Auction at Hendel’s Market Café & Piano Bar.  At a sold out event last Sunday more than 80 business, civic, and community leaders including Sen. Gina Walsh, Rep. Keith English, Rep. Jill Schupp, County Executive Charlie A. Dooley, and County Councilman Steve Stenger and Mayor Tom Schneider of Florissant and Mayor Robert Doerr of Bellefontaine Neighbors enjoyed an elegant dinner with wine pairing and silent auction.     

Thanks to NCI Board Member Chef Nathan Bennett, Owner at Hendel’s Market, and Catering Manager Christina Bennett (one of NCI’s past 30 Leaders in their Thirties honorees), and their amazing staff, guests had an evening that tickled their taste buds and pleased their palate! A nod also to: Classic Wines and their sommelier Ryan for the terrific pairings with each course and to NCI Board Member Karen McKay for “blinging” our auction items. And, a BIG THANKS to all of those who joined us or donated auction items for your support of this annual fundraiser.

The NCI Board of Directors has endorsed the Ferguson-Florissant School Districts Proposition S which will appear on the ballot August 5th. Please remember to get out and vote. You can view all the information on Proposition S via the Ferguson-Florissant School District’s website by clicking here.

On Friday, September 26th NCI, along with media sponsors GTNN and Community News, will host the annual NCI Salutes 30 Leaders in their Thirties event at Norwood Hills Country Club. The awards reception begins at 11:30am.

Metro celebrated the ground breaking for its new North County Metro Transit Station in the City of Ferguson on Monday, July 21st. The new station will be located on the site of the old Mazda dealership on Pershall Road between W. Florissant Avenue and New Halls Ferry Road.

North St. Louis County makes up about 20 percent of Metro’s ridership and has the highest increase in ridership over the last 5 years. The transit center will have 10 bus bays, concession stands, a free parking lot and an indoor waiting area.

North County Inc.’s Chairman of the Board, Chief Mike Gantner, and board members, Dan Boyle, and Ferguson Mayor James Knowles were in attendance for the ceremony. NCI has actively supported the opening of this center so that the residents of North County will have improved public transportation services. It was exciting to witness the ground breaking. The transit center is expected to open in the fall of 2015.

Welcome to NCI’s newest Board Member Ruby Curry, who was recently appointed as Interim President for St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley.  Ruby has been with the college for the past 38 years.  She replaced Marcia Pfeiffer who retired in June.

St. Louis County Parks are hosting “Feast in the Parks” Food Truck events all summer long at various parks in St. Louis. August 6th from 5-8pm the event will take place at the North County Recreation Center. The “Power Play” will be playing live that evening.
The Northeast Deanery Federation of Catholic Schools is hosting a Family Field Trip to The Magic House on Sunday, August 10th, 6-8PM.  Cost is $10 per family.  To learn more or to RSVP for the trip online click here.
Christian Hospital is hosting its next “Just Lose It” session beginning on Saturday, August 16 from 9-11am at the Detrick Building Atrium. The cost to participate is $10 with weigh-ins occurring on a weekly basis for 10 to 12 weeks with those participating being eligible for prizes. St. Louis County is hosting the North County Pool Grand Opening on Saturday, August 16th, at the North County Recreational Complex. The ceremony will take place at 12pm and the pool opens at 12:30pm. City of Florissant is hosting a Food Truck “Knight” on August 22nd at the Knights of Columbus Grounds on Washington. The event which takes place in the evening will feature over 20 different food trucks with proceeds going to benefit many local charities.
City of Florissant’s Police Department and the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District are cohosting a Public Safety Citizen Academy starting on August 27th. The Academy is a 9 week program that will be held every Wednesday from the 27th thru October 22nd from 6:30-9:30pm. Cost to attend the Academy is $10 and size is limited to 24 participants. SSM DePaul Health Center is hosting a Healthy Heart Valves seminar on Thursday, Sept 4. The event will take place at DePaul’s May Center from 6 – 7:30pm. Greater North County Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 2014 “Music Trivia Night” fundraiser on Saturday, September 13th at the JFK Community Center in Florissant. City of Ferguson is hosting a Grand Opening Family Fun Fair at the new Ferguson Community Center on Saturday, September 20th. The event will take place from 10am to 4pm to commemorate the new community center. There will be lots of food, fun and games. For more information click here.
St. Louis Community College is hosting its 3rd Annual “Tee For Tuition” Golf Tournament on September 22 at Tapawingo National Golf Club in Sunset Hills. The event is $175 per golfer and includes greens fees, cart, lunch and dinner. This event supports the St. Louis Community College Scholarship Fund. Christian Hospital Foundation is hosting its 6th Annual Legacy Leaders Dinner on Tuesday, October 21st. This event is held to celebrate our community by honoring those that make a difference. The Foundation’s Legacy Leaders Committee is currently seeking nominations for their awards that will be presented that evening. Hazelwood School District’s Transportation Department was awarded the 2014 Fleet Excellence Award by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and DESE. Hazelwood was presented with the award, given to districts that maintain higher than a 90 percent rate of passes on their bus fleets, at the 49th Annual Missouri Assoc. for Pupil Transportation conference in Springfield, MO on July 10th. Hazelwood School District students Cadence Arnold and Kara Libby recently participated in the Missouri Youth Honor Choirs in Jefferson City. Cadence is in 5th grade and was selected for the 4/5/6 Honor Choir. Kara will be a junior at Hazelwood West and was selected for the 9/10 Honor Choir.
Metro held the ground breaking for its new North County Transit Center on Monday, July 21st. The new transit center is being constructed in the City of Ferguson and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2015. Pattonville High School’s recently graduated senior, Denish Jaswal, finished the 2014 school year ranked 11th in the Nation following an appearance at the National Speech/Debate Tournament this summer. Jaswal debated 12 rounds before being knocked out in double elimination. Jaswal also finished the year ranked 1st in Missouri. Denish will be attending St. Louis University in the fall.
Ritenour School District graduate, Steve Cash, was once again selected to represent Team USA on their Paralympic Sled Hockey Team at their tryout camp this month. This is the 10th time Cash has been selected to represent the USA as their goaltender. He recently led the US team to the Gold medal at the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi. St. Louis County held the grand opening ceremony for the Early Explorers Child Development Academy in Wellston on Monday, July 21. The Academy will provide high quality, affordable, early childhood education opportunities for children in the Wellston area. University of Missouri – St Louis recently named Paulette Isaac-Savage the Associate Provost for planning and assessment. Prior to being named Provost she was a professor of educational leadership and policy studies in the College of Education. To read the full story please click here.
University of Missouri – St. Louis alumna, Kim Hudson was named morning host of the Fox 2’s morning show beginning July 20. Hudson is taking over the 9am spot from Tim Ezell. UMSL faculty, staff and alumni greeted her with a live cheer from the Mark Twain Athletic Center on her first day. To read the full story click here.
White Auto Body’s, Steve and Valerie White, recently recognized and celebrated the 10th service anniversary of Kenny Smit. Kenny is employed at White Auto Body West as a Repair Consultant.

City of Berkeley recently announced the hiring of a new city manager, Abdul Abdullah. Abdul comes to the city with experience which includes time spent with the Affordable Housing Commission in the City of St. Louis and as Director of the Family and Workforce Center of America. City of Ferguson has several job vacancies with the city that they are looking to fill with qualified applicants. The positions that are available range from Library Director and Lifeguards to Police Dispatchers and Code Enforcement Officers. The city is also looking to hire an Asst. Chief of Police. City of Florissant along with the Florissant Old Town Partners will be hosting a plaque dedication for the late Donald L. Bond on Wednesday, August 27th at 301 Rue St. Francois starting at 6pm. City of Hazelwood’s Police Dept. and Police Explorers Post #9217 sent 5 members and 2 department advisors to the 2014 National Law Enforcement Explorers Conference at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. They were among over 2,500 explorers from across the country attending the event this year. To read the full story click here.

Christian Hospital’s Child Development Center is enrolling for its early childhood programs. The CDC is state licensed and accredited, and professionally staffed with ongoing programs for children aged 6 weeks to 6 years and includes a full-day kindergarten. Ferguson-Florissant School District recently appointed several new administrators for the 2014-15 school year. Some of the appointments included Ms. Jane Crawford as Principal of McCluer High School, Mr. Jeffrey Tandler as Asst. Ferguson-Florissant School District’s Board of Education approved seeking an operating tax levy increase during the upcoming election on August 5th. Voters will be asked to approve Proposition S, an overall tax ceiling increase of $.50 per $100 of property’s assessed value.
Jennings School District hosted an early college enrollment field trip for 20 of their college-bound seniors from Jennings High School on Tuesday, July 22. The students traveled to Florissant Valley Community College to enroll in college for part of their senior year. Ritenour School District recently announced several administrative changes within the district. Patricia Closson and Christopher Isaacs were both hired as Asst. Principals at Ritenour High School. Ritenour, in partnership with the OASIS Tutoring Program is seeking volunteers to spend time with children who need a little extra help learning to read. Rotary Club of Florissant is hosting a season long fundraiser in collaboration with the St. Louis Rams. The event is part of Rotary International’s “End Polio Now” fundraiser.
