At this event, several area leaders/businesses will be recognized for the significant positive impact they are making in North County. The event will be held on Friday, May 13th, 2016, 7:30-9:30 a.m. More than 600 business, civic, and community leaders attend this celebration each year. Be sure you are one of them. Award Categories:

Elmer Belsha Leadership Award is presented annually to an individual who has made a long-term commitment to NCI and North County, and has had a positive impact on the community and/or public body that they serve.

Business Development Award is presented to those whose efforts have positively affected the economic development and business climate of the North County area.

Community Development Awards are presented to those whose efforts positively benefit youth, residents, civic organizations, or others through selfless acts. Their contribution needs to be beyond the individual’s employment responsibilities, or a business/organization’s mission and scope of work.

Public Service Awards are presented to outstanding individuals, elected, appointed, or employed by a public body whose long-time service has had a positive impact on the community and/or public body they serve.

The City of Florissant will be holding their 6th Annual Florissant Garage Sale at the James J Eagan Ice Rink on April 30 2016, from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Federation of Catholic Schools Northeast Deanery students had the honor of leading the national anthem at a St. Louis University Billikens mens basketball game. The student choir from Christ Light of the Nations School was led by Ms. Dea Hudson.
Ferguson-Florissant School District has announced that five students from McCluer South-Berkeley High School have qualified to compete at the DECA State Career Development Conference in Lake Ozark, MO, March 13-15. The students, seniors Josh Barnes, Rickey Wilbourn, Kelly Garner and Chrisuan Bryant; along with sophomore Diamond Smith, were among the top finishers in the recently held district competition. Ferguson-Florissant School District congratulates Shawnean Callihan, a counselor at Halls Ferry Elementary School, who has been named the 2015-16 Elementary Counselor of the Year by the St. Louis Suburban School Counselor Association (SLSSCA). Awardees demonstrate innovation in guidance and counseling, provide leadership in their program and perform outstanding service to the school community. PRESS RELEASE
City of Florissant Mayor Thomas Schneider was invited to speak to the students at the Hazelwood Northwest Middle School. Mayor Schneider spoke with students about the history of opportunity in recorded history including the American Experiment and the Civil Rights Era, and played excerpts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech and Winston Churchill’s speech “Finest Hour."
Hazelwood School District students recently participated in the Missouri Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) Career Development Conference held at the St. Louis Outlet Mall in Hazelwood, MO. East High had 42 students attend, 14 of which finished in first, second or third place and have earned the right to advance to the State DECA competition that will be held, Mar. 13 – 15 at the Lake of the Ozarks. Future site of the It’s All About the Fruits and Veggies Garden.
Hazelwood School District's Brown Elementary was recently selected by Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation to receive the 2015-16 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant in the amount of $4,833. The grant will be used to fund the “It’s All About the Fruits and Veggies Garden” project. PRESS RELEASE
Hazelwood School District's Garrett Elementary was recently recognized by Solution Tree for its sustained success in raising student achievement. Garrett’s successful implementation of the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) at Work process was a major contributing factor in the improved achievement of its students. Garrett was one of about 200 schools and districts in the US and Canada to receive this honor. MORE INFO
Congratulations to Jennings School District, NCI Member and 2016 St. Louis Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Arcus Award for Achievement in Educational Attainment
Pattonville School District high school students earned medals during Gateway Chess League tournaments in January. Junior Mihir Boara medaled at the competition at Lindbergh where he won three of four matches. Sophomore Joseph Kasprzyk competed at the Pattonville competition and medaled for winning all four matches on Board 4. MORE INFO
Ritenour School District’s varsity girls' volleyball team was honored with the Team Scholastic Achievement Award by the Missouri State High School Activities Association for attaining a team GPA of 3.0 or above. In addition to the team honor, four individual players earned the Academic All-State award for attaining a minimum of a 3.6 cumulative GPA every semester throughout their high school career. Riverview Gardens School District has been named one of the 2016 Innovative Districts by the International Center for Leadership in Education. The designation was based on several factors including RGSD's systemwide approach, systemwide vision, rapid improvement, organizational leadership, instructional leadership and teaching as a way to support instructional excellence.
Riverview Gardens School District received accolades and a formal resolution to celebrate and support its recent progress from St. Louis County Council members. The district's Special Administrative Board, Superintendent of Schools and High School Principal, were on hand to accept the resolution during the St. Louis County Council board meeting.
Saint Louis Crisis Nursery collected 300 pursesto benefit women using Crisis Nursery services.  Guests were asked to donate new or gently used handbags filled with lotions, sanitizers, toiletries, gas cards and other items women living in poverty may not be able to afford.

Karlos Ramirez
St. Louis Economic Development Partnership has named Karlos Ramirez at their new Board of Directors Chairperson. Ramirez is executive director of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan St. Louis, a post he's held since 2011. PRESS RELEASE

Barbara Harbach
UMSL's Curators' Professor of Music, Barbara Harbach, has been named No. 7 on a list of the 30 Most Innovative Women Professors Alive Today. In addition to being a professor, Harbach is also a composer whose works have been performed worldwide. She is the founder of Women in the Arts, the co-founder and senior editor of WomenArts Quarterly Journal and hosts the Women in the Arts radio show. PRESS RELEASE

Travis Johnson
UMSL engineering student alumnus, Travis Johnson is now an electrical engineer at POWER Engineers, a job he landed after working a co-op position at the company in the UMSL/WUSTL Joint Engineering Program. The co-op program joins engineering students with local companies for hands-on, internship experience prior to graduation. PRESS RELEASE
Hazelwood School District students mentored elementary students at Keeven Elementary in partnership with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri. Students in the Transform Ur Future program (TUF), mentored the elementary students on strategies to prevent and respond to violence and abusive situations. PRESS RELEASE
Hazelwood School District fifth grade students at Larimore Elementary, recently had the chance to practice interview skills with several community professionals/mentors during Larimore’s Saturday Academy (LSA). Students discussed their strengths, accomplishments and achievements with mentors in a multitude of career areas. Normandy Schools Collabroative students at Barack Obama Elementary School are holding a bottled water drive to help students and their families in Flint, Michigan. Debbie Green
Pattonville School District has elected Debbie Green, a gifted education teacher in Pattonville, to the 2015-2016 Gifted Association of Missouri Board of Directors as GAM Conference Chairman. Green has been an active leader in the gifted education field. MORE INFO

Michael Smith
Ritenour School District has announced that Mr. Michael Smith will be the principal of Marvin Elementary School, effective July 1, 2016. Smith, who has been assistant principal at Marvin since 2009, will replace Mary Beth Fortney, who announced this fall that she will retire at the end of the school year. PRESS RELEASE
The Spanish Lake Community Development Corporation has announced that Angela Pinex has been hired as its new Executor Director effective Monday, February 22.

St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger and County Councilman Sam Page, MD are urging passage of legislation designed to fight rapidly growing opioid and heroin abuse in the county by creating a prescription database. PRESS RELEASE
St. Louis County has announced the first phase of development of a state-of- the-art, destination soccer complex in Creve Coeur Park. The complex, currently targeted to open in Fall 2017, will feature 13 lighted artificial turf fields, a championship field with permanent seating for up to 500, a main building with locker rooms, and a satellite facility with restrooms and concessions. Penny Rogers is a Vice President, Branch Manager for BancorpSouth in Clayton.  Representative Anne Zerr (R) represents part of St. Charles County (District 65) in the Missouri House of Representatives. David C. Malone is the founder of the Malone Integration Group, LLC (M.I.G.) and Retirement Solutions LLC.
Trinity Catholic High School will again be providing a $2000 tuition scholarship to all eighth grade students applying for the 2016-17 school year.
