The first was to launch University Square, a new economic development initiative with communities in the Normandy area and the second was to dedicate Metro’s latest Arts in Transit installation, a towering sculpture called “Changing Identities.”

University Square is a community development corporation and an urban redevelopment corporation that will facilitate the revitalization of the area bordered by St. Charles Rock Road, Interstate 170, Interstate 70 and Lucas and Hunt Road. I, along with NCI Board member Mayor Patrick Green, City of Normandy, Betty Van Uum, former NCI Board member Rita Days, St. Louis County Elections Board, Chris Krehmeyer, Beyond Housing serve on the Board of Directors for University Square. Start-up funding for this initiative has been provided by the St. Louis Port Authority and St. Louis County Economic Partnership.

The impetus for University Square began with the Great Streets–Natural Bridge Initiative. Construction begins this summer to transform Natural Bridge Road between Hanley and Lucas and Hunt Roads into a pedestrian friendly, landscaped boulevard. More than $14 million will be invested in reducing vehicular lanes from four to two, new lighting, on-street parking, along with landscaped medians, and a roundabout and plaza at the intersection of Florissant and Natural Bridge roads. Completion is scheduled for December 2015.

You can review the full event program by clicking here.

NCI is a proud supporter of University Square and on May 4th they are hosting an open house that will be your opportunity to visit and tour the many homes available for sale in the area. The event takes places from 1-4pm beginning at the Hunt House at 7717 Natural Bridge Road. More information is available by clicking here.

Congratulations to NCI Chairman of the Board, Chief Michael Gantner on being presented with the 2014 Citizen of the Year Award by the Old Jamestown Association. The presentation will take place at the Association’s Spring General Meeting on Thursday, May 1, at 7:30.

NCI is a proud supporter of East-West Gateway and they are inviting the public to comment on their new Public Involvement Plan. East-West Gateway has revised its plan for 2014 as part of an on-going planning process designed to ensure continuous improvement in East-West Gateway’s efforts to maintain its strong commitment to public involvement. For more information go to www.ewgateway.org; the comment period ends on May 19.
