Hazelwood School District is hosting its annual Fall Family Festival on Thursday, September 11th from 5-7:30pm at Hazelwood East High School. The event is open to HSD students, their families, staff and the entire community. The festival includes free dinner, games, face painting, a community resource fair and much more. Northwest Healthcare is hosting a 10 Year Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, September 13th from 10am – 2pm at the Northwest Healthcare building on Graham Road. Greater North County Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 2014 “Music Trivia Night” fundraiser on Saturday, September 13th at the JFK Community Center in Florissant. St. Louis County is hosting a “Grandparent Fishing Fun Day” on Saturday, September 13th, from 10am – 2pm at the James O’ Mara Shelter in Spanish Lake Park. Pattonville School District is hosting its annual Homecoming celebration on September 19th and 20th. This year’s theme is “A Night on Broadway”. The Football game is Friday, Sept. 19th at 7pm against Webster Groves H.S. The Homecoming Parade will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20th at 10am and will begin at the intersection of Mark Twain Lane and McKelvey running down to the High School. St. Louis Community College is hosting its 3rd Annual “Tee For Tuition” Golf Tournament on September 22 at Tapawingo National Golf Club in Sunset Hills. The event is $175 per golfer and includes greens fees, cart, lunch and dinner. This event supports the St. Louis Community College Scholarship Fund. Beyond Housing is hosting its “Divas For a Cause” event on September 25th at the Sheldon Concert Hall. Ritenour School District’s Pride and Promise Foundation is hosting its 2nd Annual “Midland Mile” race on September 27. The event starts at 9am and runs from Norman Myers Park in Overland down Midland Blvd. Cost is $20 for adults and $10 and under for kids. City of Hazelwood announced the winners of its 2014 Blue Ribbon Home Awards Program at a recent city council meeting. The owners of two homes in each ward were selected as winners and received a blue ribbon and plaque. Sponsored by the Hazelwood Community Enrichment Commission the awards have been presented since 1986. To see the full release and list of winners please click here.
Hendel’s Market Café’s Pastry Chef, Lia Weber, and her partner Al Watson won the 4th season of TLC’s reality series, Next Great Baker. Lia and Al beat out 10 other teams to take home the grand prize of $100,000 and the chance to work with Buddy Valastro at the new Carlo’s Bakery at The Venetian Casino in Las Vegas. Hazelwood School District educator, Chris Holmes, was announced as Missouri’s Teacher of the Year for 2014 by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Holmes is an English and Journalism teacher at Hazelwood West High School and has been with the district for 8 years. He will now represent Missouri in the National Teacher of the Year competition. Ritenour School District made great strides on its most recent performance report given by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. DESE’s annual report showed that Ritenour has earned 80.7 percent of the total possible points under MSIP 5. This is more than an 8 percent gain in APR points since last year. Ritenour School District was selected by Governor Nixon to host a round-table discussion with students on August 26th. The event took place in the school’s new media convergence center, where Nixon was joined by 20 students and Superintendent Dr. Chris Kilbride. They discussed many issues including the current events in Ferguson. Following the discussion the Governor taped an interview with Ritenour’s student run, KRHS 90.1, radio station. University of Missouri – St. Louis alumnus and head track coach at McCluer North High School in the Ferguson–Florissant School District, Sheldon Webster, was recently named Missouri Girls Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He lead the Star’s Women’s track team to the state title in May.

City of Florissant welcomed Archbishop Jordan of Rheims, France to the Old St. Ferdinand Shrine on August 26 for a Benediction Celebration. This year marked the 800th anniversary of the birth of King Louis IX of France, also known as St. Louis and the namesake of our city now celebrating its own 250th anniversary. The archbishop received a tour of the shrine and concluded his visit with a public celebration of Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Christian Hospital’s Child Development Center is enrolling for its early childhood programs. The CDC is state licensed and accredited, and professionally staffed with ongoing programs for children aged 6 weeks to 6 years and includes a full-day kindergarten. Federation of Catholic Schools Northeast Deanery hosted a night of family fun at the magic house on August 10th. Many families showed up to take part in the event which was an evening filled with hands-on, active fun!
Ferguson-Florissant School District’s “Friends of Ferguson-Florissant Schools” is seeking donations to help out the students and families of the district that have been impacted by recent events. Jennings School District staff modeled a peaceful way to support and engage the community by helping to clean up the streets of the Ferguson community following a night of protests. Jennings sent approximately 200 staff members out into the community to help clean things up in the aftermath of the rioting including administrators, teachers and support staff. Hazelwood School District alumnus and former NFL player, Brandon Williams, met with incoming freshman at Hazelwood East High School to provide them with an inspirational message prior to the start of school. Pattonville School District middle schoolers marked the end of their week-long Pattonville Aquatic Robot Camp by testing out their custom-made robots in the swimming pool at Pattonville High School. The 20 students explored different aspects of basic robotics in a watery environment and used devices like soldering irons and rotary drills to create their robots. The camp was offered in partnership with the Challenger Learning Center – St. Louis.

The turmoil in Ferguson shines new attention on the importance of understanding neighborhood dynamics. Senator Gina Walsh, D-Bellefontaine Neighbors, highlighted today the Secretary of State’s new online system to ease filing for business owners in Missouri. Previously, only five forms could be filed online; the new system allows almost every form that must be filed with the Secretary of State to be submitted through the website.
